Carnival Cruise Line guide: Everything to know about ships, itineraries and more

carvival cruise

Family life is the sweet life, whether on land or at sea… and especially when in a Family Harbor Suite. Your whole crew will enjoy not only the stretch-out space, huge balcony and other perks a suite offers, but a nautical décor specially-designed for Family Harbor staterooms. And while you sail along, the kids and the adults can make use of exclusive access to the nearby Family Harbor Lounge, plus other exclusive perks around the ship. In-room, there’s a full bathroom… plus the convenience of a separate washroom. A private yacht it’s not… but leave the sailing to us — you’d rather be relaxing anyway.

Port Canaveral (Orlando)

Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, notably, has its very own in-house brewery you can see behind glass walls — something still relatively rare on cruise ships. It makes house beers including Parched Pig West Coast IPA and Parched Pig Toasted Amber which you'll find on many Carnival vessels in kegs and cans. Carnival is the only cruise line to keg and can its own beer.

Do I have to dress up on a Carnival cruise?

Carnival is the undisputed leader among North America-based cruise brands when it comes to affordability, which makes it popular with vacationers on a budget. The overarching idea for Carnival's ship deployments is that a large percentage of the U.S. population can reach one of the line's ships by car, saving the cost of flights. Carnival has just begun operating its first truly giant ships in years, the 181,808-ton, 5,282-passenger Mardi Gras and the 183,521-ton, 5,374-passenger Carnival Celebration. However, the line's next-biggest vessel, the 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia, measures just 135,225 tons.

Carnival Legend

Carnival adds an automatic service gratuity of $16 to $18 per person, per day to final bills, depending on the cabin category (children under the age of 2 are exempt). If you are unhappy with the service you receive, you can adjust this amount at the Guest Services desk before disembarking. Also, an 18% gratuity is added to bar bills and the cover charge of the Chef's Table. In short, there's a ton to do up top on Carnival vessels — and it's almost all available to every passenger on board the vessels at no extra charge (the roller coaster is the only exception). Carnival Panorama also houses Carnival's first cooking classroom.

Onboard Communication

carvival cruise

Dubbed Carnival Kitchen, it's located near the ship's main restaurants and is a seriously tricked-out venue complete with nine state-of-the-art, marbled granite cooking stations for two and a dedicated dining area. On one of Carnival's newest ships, Carnival Panorama, there's no RedFrog Pub, but the Smokehouse Brewhouse has a stage that's home to live music nightly and some of the ship's karaoke sessions. The latter venue was created in partnership with Food Network's Guy Fieri and serves a free lunch on embarkation and sea days, with all items smoked on board. In addition, every ship has at least one — and usually several — extra-charge eateries. The two venues have flat fees of $49 and $24 per person, respectively. Design-wise, Carnival's cabins and suites are fairly basic and comfortable, if not super stylish.

You’re about to discover just what awaits you on a Carnival cruise. Start by exploring the incredible ports we visit… and the fun things to do, both on the ship and ashore. “The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release. “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Carnival ships are all about fun, in a lively, let's-not-take-this-too-seriously sort of way. If you're sure Carnival is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand.

Ocean View

With few exceptions, Carnival sails exclusively from North American homeports and offers some of the lowest pricing in the industry, particularly on short three- and four-night Carnival Caribbean cruises. Most onboard activities such as shows and deck-top attractions are included in the fare. On the entertainment side of things, Carnival Liberty features two of our best, live on stage. First there's Playlist Productions™, where pros sing and dance their hearts out, performing high-energy themed revues of tunes you know, backed by amazing visual effects.

Carnival Pride

You don't even need to be a critic to enjoy Dive-In Movies, where cinematic favorites are up on the big screen, poolside. Carnival Jubilee has the travel pros and press about as excited as cruise fans. Carnival Jubilee™ has its own Punchliner Comedy Club in the Grand Central zone, and up on stage you’ll find some real pros who know how to wedge a little laughter into anyone’s evening. Since some of them get up and say exactly what’s on their mind, we also schedule family-friendly performances… so the only red faces in the audience are from laughing a little too hard. On July 31, 2021, after numerous delays, the highly anticipated Mardi Gras entered service, sailing year round from Port Canaveral.

ONBOARD ACTIVITIES

The younger children in this age range (12-14) are grouped into what's known as Circle C and have their own dedicated lounge on ships. It's a place to get together to talk, watch movies, play video games and take part in other activities. Unlike some lines, Carnival has resisted the trend of big-ship operators carving out whole sections of deck-top areas for the exclusive use of passengers staying in suites or willing to pay hefty access fees. In fact, when it comes to waterslides on ships, Carnival is the cruise world's king. There's now at least one waterslide on all but one ship in the Carnival fleet (Carnival Luminosa) — something no other line can say. Also, there are always several music venues where you'll find live performers in the afternoons and evenings, including — on some ships — the Atrium Bar and a secondary hub area called Ocean Plaza.

During my recent sailing, I found all the Carnival classics, like the Alchemy Bar and Guy’s Burger Joint, a thrilling ropes course, dive-in movies, and plenty of themed deck parties. Rent cabanas or lounge in the ocean-view whirlpools at Loft 19, where attentive staff take care of everything, like delivering you fruit and chilled towels. My favorite spot to hang out was the aft Patio Pool because it wasn't ever super crowded, and the view of the ocean was unmatched. Carnival Jubilee is the newest Excel-class ship in the fleet, sailing from Galveston, Texas.

During the day, there is no specific dress code, and people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination, and you're bound for the top deck, that means looking like you're going to the beach — T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside) are just fine. Note that three of the line's newest ships — Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Venezia — do not have launderettes. Carnival fans are quite peeved about this, and you should be, too. The social and value plans cost $18 and $23 per day, respectively, when bought onboard a ship.

Despite being one of the industry's lowest-cost operators, Carnival manages to pull off one of the best steakhouses at sea in Fahrenheit 555, and even the no-extra-charge main restaurants get the basics right. Like other big-ship operators, Carnival packs a lot of dining options onto its vessels — some included in the price, some at an extra charge. Carnival vessels based on the East Coast and along the Gulf of Mexico mostly sail to the Caribbean and Bahamas. Some East Coast ships also head to Bermuda, New England and Canada. On the West Coast, sailings to Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska are the norm.

The Best Cruise Dresses for Formal Night All Shapes & Sizes

Start with a base of moisture-wicking fabrics and add layers such as cardigans, pullovers, or light jackets that you can remove or add as needed. This approach allows for seamless transitions from the calm wind on the deck to the warmer interior spaces of the ship. Embarking on a cruise entails knowing the nuances of cruise attire. As passengers, we navigate a sea of clothing options divided into distinct categories, each tailored to a specific part of the cruise experience. Casual dress cruises have reshaped our views on sea travel, offering comfort without compromising charm.

Planning a cruise? Here are some related posts that might be helpful

Reese, meanwhile, donned a backless, hooded number by Bronx and Banco. To say that women's basketball is in the midst of a cultural boom would be a vast understatement. If you are sailing to the Caribbean or Europe, you may want to focus on bringing some cute jewelry for the evenings.

Eveningwear: Casual

Here’s a list of clothing to bring on a 7 day Caribbean or warm weather cruise. My husband wore a black tuxedo and I wore a floor champagne evening gown with gorgeous beading at the top. Here are a few frequently asked questions about formal night on a cruise. For just $40, you have your option of more than a dozen colors and will look stunning on your cruise.

Enchanting Cruise Formal Night Dresses Under $150

I’d recommend going for an extra-large scarf or sweater that still can be worn over your shoulders during the evening. It’s not too casual and looks dressy, while still keeping you warm. No matter when or where your cruise is, a lightweight jacket is a good idea for added warmth on cooler nights or heavy inside air conditioning. This could be a denim jacket, a lightweight sweater, or shall.

Some cruise lines, including Disney and HAL, traditionally partnered with a company called Cruiseline Formalwear. Unfortunately, this company closed permanently during the pandemic. Instead, many cruisers have been renting tuxedos from local formal wear shops and carrying them on board.

Do all cruise lines have formal night?

With a clear grasp of what's expected, cruisers can focus on enjoying the elegant evenings, creating memorable moments without the worry of fashion faux pas. The evening dress code on our Princess cruise was smart casual for most nights. Packing a formal gown for a cruise is recommended if you plan to attend formal nights.

Do All Cruises Have a Formal Night?

This stunning long evening gown is covered with intricate sequin detailing. It would make the perfect formal night dress for women of all ages, suiting everybody from teenagers up to 50 plus, 60 plus and beyond. For the most part, the only time you’ll need to dress anything other than casual is if you participate in formal night. That said, there are some spots where some nicer clothes are a good idea even if that evening’s dress code is casual. For that reason, as long as you avoid wearing something very casual (e.g. flip flops, shorts, and a tank top), it’s likely to be no issue. Even so, we’d highly recommend dressing up somewhat if you plan on eating in a dining room or a nicer specialty restaurant.

What I Wore in the Evening on a Cruise

Men can wear stylish swim trunks with a casual shirt, epitomizing the cruise for men’s attire. Protective gear like sun hats and UV-filter sunglasses are more than fashion statements; they’re necessities to shield you from the midday glare. Below is a table highlighting essential day wear for your next cruise.

It’s available in sizes 8 to 30 with a choice of 12 colours. Even if there is not, dressing up to fit the style of the restaurant is smart. So while it’s ok to dress casually at a burger joint on the ship, you’ll want to dress a little nicer if you go to the formal Italian or seafood spot for dinner.

If you’re wondering what night formal night is on a cruise, that will also vary depending on your cruise line and itinerary. If you’re taking a seven-night cruise, the second formal night might be the second-to-last evening of the sailing. Each cruise line has its own definition of what formal night attire entails, so to give you an idea here’s what a few cruise lines say you should wear. This flattering long cocktail dress is available in several colors, including black.

If you don’t want to dress up for the evening, then you certainly don’t have to do so. If you decide that shorts and a t-shirt are as formal as you want to get, you won’t be alone. I’m short and love to wear comfortable wedge sandals that I can walk in easily. I always pack at least one pair of stylish neutral wedge style sandals to wear during the day and evening (seen in photo below). A young woman in a vacation resort hotel cruise ship lobby. A woman on her cruise vacation, dressed up in a black evening gown as she stands by the sea.

In my opinion, most women dress casually onboard, especially if your itinerary has a lot of sea days. If you're going on a 7-night cruise, you will need seven dinner outfits. You can, however, always re-wear some to save space in your suitcase and take the pressure off of you to actually plan out seven different outfits. If you’ve been wondering what to wear on your Caribbean cruise, I hope this post gave you some cruise outfit ideas and inspiration.

Now unfortunately for the men, the evening cruise line dress code applies mostly to men. After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup. For embarkation day I would plan on wearing a casual outfit with lighter materials with layers- or even your airplane outfit. Something lightweight, yet appropriate to wear wandering around the ship. I’ve been on all kinds of itineraries from shorter Caribbean cruises to long Mediterranean cruises, and from my experience, the cruise outfits generally stay the same. The benefit to this is keeping organized, which makes unpacking so much easier, on the first day of your cruise.

If you’re someone with a petite figure and don’t want to be swallowed up in a large gown, this is the perfect dress. Comes in a ton of different colors, but is the most expensive dress on the list at $120. To learn more about what sort of dress is and isn’t allowed during formal night you can read our article here. There might not be a single event on a cruise that can cause as much stress as formal night.

While you definitely can still wear an evening gown and tuxedo, most popular cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes over the last few years. You can still expect to dress up on a cruise, but there are more opportunities to dress less formally if you prefer this as well. You might be wondering what to pack and what to wear on a cruise, during the day, evening and even on formal nights. Others enjoy the chance to "clean up" without going crazy; a dark suit and a little black dress will do nicely. If you want to have fun with formal night, pack your favorite cocktail dress, dapper hat or fascinator, playful ties, jewels and cuff links. Cruisers also can rock formal military uniforms or the custom formal attire of other countries -- such as the Barong Tagalog (pictured) or a dress kilt from Scotland.

There are other numerous ways to get to the terminal ifdriving is not your chosen mode of transportation. Depending on how you plan totravel, where you’re traveling from, and what airport you may be flying into, there is no shortage of options. Originally called the New York Passenger Ship Terminal (orthe Port Authority Passenger Ship Terminal), this cruise port was built andfinished in 1935. At the time there were four piers serving ships, piers 88,90, 92, and 94.
